If you’re like us, you might spend hours at a time swiping through Netflix, searching for your next media obsession. We’re here to tell you –look no further than Netflix’s original series, Styling Hollywood. Styling Hollywood follows JSN Studio, a creative agency run by celebrity stylist Jason Bolden and his business partner/husband, Adaire Curtis. At JSN Studio, Bolden and Curtis style celebrity red carpet looks as well as provide interior design for their homes. This is what makes JSN Studio a one-stop-shop for everything style.
Throughout the 8-episode mini-series, viewers are given a glimpse into the glittering but often stressful world of celebrity styling. Bolden must take the vision of each of his celebrity clients and translate it into something unique and fitting for each individual. He has worked with names you might recognize, such as Yara Shahidi, Sabrina Carpenter, Taraji P. Henson, Storm Reid, and Alicia Keys.
A few of his most iconic looks include:
Yara Shahidi on the red carpet at the 2019 SAG Awards. Yara and Bolden fulfilled Yara’s desire to be able to move and dance in her outfit by fitting her in a pink sequined Fendi Couture catsuit worn under a tulle dress, complete with bejeweled peter-pan collar. Paired with natural hair and makeup, Yara was a breath of fresh air in this youthful look.
Serena Williams attended the 2019 Met Gala in an embellished yellow Versace gown, complete with a pair of highlighter Nike x Off-White Air Force One sneakers peeking out from beneath her trailing dress. In perfect harmony with Serena’s professional passion, this fierce and feminine look encapsulated the athlete’s personality while also paying homage to her sport.
Vanessa Hudgens stood out at the 2019 Unicef Summer Gala with boyfriend Austin Butler, in her playful yet sultry Carolina Herrera black and white polka-dot dress. Reminiscent of a classic flamenco silhouette with her hair swept back in a messy ponytail and her lips bright red, this look surprised a lot of people with its unique appeal.
Bolden has a talent for hunting down unusual pieces that some stylists might shy away from, turning them into a bold expression that suits his client’s persona. Perhaps this skill comes from his experience running the carefully curated vintage store, The Garment Room, in New York City. Now permanently closed, The Garment Room played a big part in Bolden’s emergence onto the stylist scene. In 2011, close friend Gabrielle Union asked him to curate a Garment Room outfit for an Art Basel party she was attending in Miami Beach. Following the success of her outfit, Bolden soon found himself in high demand.
For the past three years, Bolden has been listed as one of the Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Top 25 Most Powerful Stylists’. These rankings are determined by a stylist’s impact on the industry—star power, style, and social media presence. To be featured among the top 25, especially considering how many stylists are considered each year, you have to hustle hard. How Bolden balances running a business, being a devoted husband, and creating the spectacular red carpet looks he is known for is incredible.
